My 18th guest has been one of B.C.’s best runners for almost 25 years; as well as an elite website designer, wife, mum, race director, singer, photographer and community activist: Teresa Nightingale.

Teresa studied physics at university and was a standout on the UBC track team in the late 1980's/early 1990's, along with future husband Larry.

She's excelled on the track, trails, road and XC and is a three-time member of the Ekiden relay team. Her most notable PB's include 16:40 for 5k, 34:22 for 10k, 1:15:45 for the half-marathon, and 2:47:18 for the marathon.

Teresa's also thrived as a Master, becoming National XC champion in 2010 (in Guelph), and finishing 1st F45-49 in this year’s event. She's also been a podium finisher in countless other events, winning many outright.

Moving from Tsawwassen to the Sunshine Coast (SC) with Larry in 1999, Teresa has become an integral member of the Coast community; race-directing several races – including the popular April Fool’s Run half-marathon; coordinating Sunshine Coast Athletics; and strengthening the SC's entrepreneurial set with her thriving web-design business.

The Nightingales have also maintained a strong link to the Lower Mainland running community, with regular racing and event support.

My 17th guest on Inside the Runner's Mind is a Saskatchewan-born and now Vancouver, B.C.-based two-time Olympian: Carey Nelson.

Carey represented Canada in the 5000m in Seoul (1988) and the marathon in Atlanta (1996), fighting back from a major injury to achieve the latter. He’s also competed for Canada in two Commonwealth Games, the World Indoor Championships and the Pan-American Games.

A marathon PB of 2:12:38 – clocked when winning the Houston Tenneco race in 1991 – makes Carey one of the fastest marathoners in Canadian history. He also won the Toronto Marathon in 1990 and has been gracing podiums for over 30 years.

Among his other remarkable achievements are becoming the first Saskatchewan athlete to break four minutes for the 1500m – and winning a silver medal at the World University Games in 1986.

As a coach and clinic leader, Carey has helped and inspired many hundreds of runners in the Lower Mainland and beyond to pursue their passion and reach their running goals.

The Saskatoon Sports Hall of Famer, who is an accountant by day, turns 50 in 2013; timing his recent resurgence on the racing front to perfection. Look for Mr. Nelson to smash a litany of age-related records in 2013!

My 16th guest on ITRM is a remarkable lady; an Octogenarian who didn’t take up running ’til her early 50’s – and has since smashed age group records left, right and centre for over 30 years: BJ (Betty Jean) McHugh.

Born and bred in Ontario, BJ trained as a nurse, before heading west to practice in Vancouver. There she met husband Bob, raised four kids, and excelled as a swimmer, skier and tennis player. Then one day she discovered running.

BJ has since become one of the most beloved and inspiring figures in the Canadian running community; a trailblazer for the senior generation and a shining example of how it’s possible to go toe-to-toe with the aging process and come out on top.

You can find out more about BJ and her book My Road to Rome at her website: http://www.myroadtoromethebook.com/

My 15th guest on Inside the Runner’s Mind is a two-time Olympian and one of Canada’s most famous and best-loved running personalities: Art Boileau.

Born in Alberta, raised in Oregon and now calling North Vancouver, B.C. home, Art represented his country at consecutive Summer Olympics in the 1980s – Los Angeles in 1984 and Seoul in 1988.

Racing in the marathon, he finished 44th in California and 28th in South Korea. His best finish in a major games came in 1983’s inaugural World Athletics Championships, where he came 11th over 26.2 miles in Helsinki, Finland.

Art is also a two-time winner of the Los Angeles Marathon and, in one of his finest hours – or just over two, to be precise – finished second in the 1986 Boston Marathon.

He set his PB of 2:11:15 in that race – and it took a course record-setting 2:07:51 from World Champion Rob de Castella to beat him.

Art is among a cluster of Olympians helping the Vancouver store Forerunners thrive, while passing on his expertise and experience to the next generation as a coach, and still racing whenever possible.
